New Year’s REM Review and Analysis – February 2021

Introduction

The New Year’s REM returns to North America with several new cards and buffs to existing monsters in the hopes of enticing players to spend their Magic Stones here.

Historically speaking, Seasonals such as New Year’s or Christmas are notoriously poor quality machines as they often contain cards from many, many years ago. Furthermore, these ancient cards are often the lower rarity who rarely receive meaningful buffs while also comprising the majority of the rolling pool.

All of this holds true today for the current New Year’s event but I feel that the amount of valuable cards has increased, albeit in the higher rarities. This in turn creates a conundrum: risk rolling in hopes of the top prizes as cannot be Monster Exchanged for, or ignore the 7-stars and simply Exchange or IAP Bundle for the cards you desire.

For the most part, I would go with the Monster Exchange route and pray the free rolls yield something meaningful as the bottom rarity is truly disastrous.

Bottom rarity quick summary

The bottom rarity should be the main motivation to roll in an event and the following chart shows all the 4 & 5-star Rankings.

Limit Breaking

Limit Breaking is the process of leveling a card beyond level 99. This will unlock more weighted stats along with the potential to receive Super Awakenings. These additional awakenings can add significant power, but only function in solo mode or in 3-player coop.

Any card that can qualify for Limit Breaking will have their level displayed in blue and feeding a Super Snow Globe will push them beyond the level 99 cap.

You can read more about Super Awakenings HERE.

Monster Exchange

The Monster Exchange System has mostly eliminated the need to roll in most events as players can simply trade in for a card of their choice. This is often done during lackluster events to avoid spending Stones on poor bottom rarity cards or to snipe a specific card if luck is not on your side.

Due to the rate of new cards being released, care should be taken when considering a trade as you want to ensure you gain long term value.

Weapon Assists

Weapon Assists are a special evolution for select cards that will be used exclusively as inherits. This form retains the same base stats as the original form, but will also transfer over all awakenings on the Weapon Assist card and this occurs if the Awoken Assist  is present.

My approach to Collab/Seasonal rolling

Rolling any Rare Egg Machine is a gamble and it becomes a matter of maximizing your rate of returns in an event.

This translates into rolling when the bottom rarity has high value as those will be the most common cards. Furthermore, I may utilize the Monster Exchange system to acquire the higher rarity cards if they will significantly advance my progress. As such, I tend to look most closely at the bottom rarity pool to determine if it is worth rolling in.

This is just my own personal approach and everyone has different goals/motivations so take this section with a grain of salt. If you wish to read about this more in greater detail, check out my other article HERE.

Reincarnated Evolution

A Reincarnated Evolution (Revo) grants  up to 8 Latent slots and is often times a stronger overall card. Sadly, pursuing these forms will lock the monster in this state as they cannot be reversed. As such, only commit to a Revo if you 100% know you will get significant value from them right away.

9 Star base

Writing Spirit Dragonbound, Lajoa (New) – S

Pros
Cons
  • Interesting 3 turn CD
    • Jammer & Poison Skyfall
    • Converts Hazards to Light & Dark
    • Helps with orb generation
  • Solid personal damage
  • Passive Damage via Enhanced Light & Dark Combos
  • High LS multipliers
    • BIG HP
    • Bonus Combos
    • Auto Follow Up
  • LS lacks Damage Reduction
    • Vulnerable to Gravities
  • LS requires Healing solution
  • LS requires 2 Light & 2 Dark combos for optimal performance
    • Needs 8 combos for ATK multiplier
      • 2 Dark matches adds + 2 per leaders
  • Some spawns negatively interact with Hazards
  • Lacks VDP
    • Wastes offensive awakenings
  • Opportunity cost of not using Weapon

NY Lajoa is the first new card to be released for the New Year’s event and comes with a unique kit overall. Firstly, their awakenings grant them respectable personal damage along with Passive Damage via Enhanced Combos . These awakenings grant bonus damage when matching 2 or more combos of the matching colour.

This in turn can greatly augment the damage output of the entire team and can be viewed as a form of Passive Damage for the corresponding colour.

With that being said, Lajoa can function as an interesting leader as they require 2 Dark and 2 Light combos for optimal performance. Matching all of these will grant +2 combos with a single leader and Auto Follow Up along with their full ATK multiplier at 8 combos. Players can help facilitate this with their 3 turn active that generates Light & Dark orbs while also producing Hazard Skyfall.

While Lajoa does not need to hit 2 combos of each to function, their full potential is somewhat orb hungry but there is a modest layer of security as they have access to an high, unconditional HP multiplier.

While this will enable to them to survive regular hits at any time, the lack of Damage Reduction will leave them vulnerable to Gravities while also requiring a Healing solution. Furthermore, both Lajoas lack VDP so your subs will have to cover this shortcoming along with various spawns negatively interacting with remaining Hazard orbs.

As a whole, I feel NY Lajoa is a strong card but I feel their full potential is achieved through their Weapon Assist.

 Weapon Assist

Pros
Cons
  • 2 Team HP
  • Skill Boost Skill Boost
  • Tape Resist
  • Valuable active
    • 75% Damage Reduction for 2 turns
      • Can function as Effective SB
      • Can save you from large unavoidable hits
    • Tri colour board with Hearts
  • Difficult to roll/acquire

NY Lajoa’s Weapon is phenomenally powerful as it provides 2 Team HP , Skill Boost Skill Boost, and Tape Resist . This is quite similar to the highly coveted Amatsu Lute and Fagan Rai Weapons and trades Cloud for Tape Resist.

While I feel Tape is a lower priority compared to Cloud, the other effects are still meaningful and the active skill can add Effective Skill Boosts. This is because 2 turns of 75% Damage Reduction is akin to 4x HP for those turns and will often be sufficient to tank large incoming hits. Furthermore, the Damage Reduction can be used for later floors in content such as Shura 2/Ruler of Hell’s Halls to survive the large, unavoidable hits.

Taking all of this into consideration, I would pursue this Weapon over NY Lajoa’s base form.

New Year Reeche – S

Pros
Cons
  • Solid personal damage
    • Can greatly augment via Machine Killer SA Machine Killer & Latents
    • Highly relevant for World of Carnage/Shura Realm
  • Incredible active
    • 3 turn Damage & Colour Absorb Void
    • Rainbow board changer
    • CD offset by 3 Skill Charge
      • Potentially ready after 8 turns
  • Arguably one of the best/best Rainbow sub
  • Solid leader in their own right
    • High multipliers
  • LS lacks Bonus Combos or Auto Follow Up
    • Harder to tap into 10c cards

NY Reeche is a truly outstanding card as they can function as arguably one of the best or the best Rainbow sub. This is because they have a solid ATK stat along with triple 7 Combo 45 but can also gain a Machine Killer Machine Killer Super Awakening and Latents.

This will drastically amply their damage against most of the major spawns in World of Carnage while also carrying an invaluable active.

Damage and Colour Absorb are common mechanics and must be countered by actives and the fact that this lasts for 3 turns is meaningful for either back-to-back spawns or for spawns with too high Effective HP to kill in a single turn (eg. Menoas).

While the 30 turn cooldown is off-putting, the 3 Skill Charges can potentially reduce this to 8 turns which is pretty magical overall.

As such, NY Reeche has an incredible, potentially low cooldown active along with immense personal damage against Machine spawns and will be at home on any Rainbow team that can use them.

While NY Reeche does have a solid LS, it does lack bonus combos or Auto Follow Up which can make it harder to tap into cards with 10c awakenings. With that being said, they still boast solid multipliers and can most certainly be used to solid success.

Weapon Assist

Pros
Cons
  • Don’t make this
  • Outrageously high opportunity cost of not using Base form

New Year Reeche’s Base form is one of the strongest Rainbow cards available and it would be a tragedy to convert your only card into this form.

This is not to say this is a terrible Weapon, but more so stressing how strong their Base form is by comparison.

8 Star base

Promenading Moonlight Princess, Tsukuyomi – B

Pros
Cons
  • L
  • Modest personal damage
  • Some Passive Damage
  • Super Blind Resist
  • Does not fulfil any particular niche

NY Yomi’s non Revo form has a reasonable kit but does not fulfil any particular role efficiently. This is problematic in a day where specialists reign supreme which also diminishes the chance for a generalist to function.

And a generalist is exactly what NY Yomi is as they offer a bit of everything but does not excel in any one metric. This does not change with their new Revo form either.

Strolling Moonlight Princess, Tsukuyomi

Pros
Cons
  • Higher personal damage or Super Poison Resist or 4 SB Skill Boost
  • Passive Damage via Enhanced Combos
  • High LS multipliers when matching Light & Dark
    • 84% Damage Reduction
  • High base HP
  • Does not keep abreast with current high-end cards
    • Mixing Enhanced Combos dilutes damage
  • Active skill has a relatively long CD
    • Does not achieve enough
    • Does not generate Light & Dark orbs
  • LS has no Effective HP if unable to match Light and Dark

NY Yomi’s Revo form grants them Passive Damage via Enhanced Combos but I feel that mixing the two has a negative effect as it dilutes their potential. If they had 2 Light Enhanced Combos, it would be more efficient but a lack of efficiency is going to be the main theme for NY’s Yomi.

This is because their overall kit lacks true specialization as they cannot fulfil any specific role better compared to other cards. When looking at their active skill, it is okay but at 8 turn cooldown we expect more along with the fact that Transforming cards have significantly over-tuned abilities by comparison.

While they do have strong Super Awakenings, you can only choose 1 and while it does improve them in that metric, it does not exceed other options.

I feel that if NY Yomi had received a similar treatment to Christmas Gremory we would be having a different conversation. This is attributed to Gremory having a much stronger active as it clears Unable to Match Orb Effects while also generating orbs and clearing Binds along with not mixing Enhanced Combos for optimal damage. While Gremory has lower personal damage, that is fine as her utility role is much stronger by comparison.

On the other hand, NY Yomi’s Leader Skill boasts large numbers but will suffer from inconsistency due to having no Effective HP without Light and Dark combos along with their active not contributing to orb generation or having a System available. As such, players may find themselves in a bad situation far too often and a lack of consistency is not a healthy thing for a leader.

2534 Crimson Sun Longevity Dragon Caller, Kanna – C

Pros
Cons
  • Pretty
  • 5 Skill Boosts Skill Boost
  • Cloud Resist
  • Too many wasteful TPA TPA
    • Does not even provide much damage
  • Does not fulfil any particular role well

New Year’s Kanna can be boiled down to a card with 5 Effective Skill Boosts Skill Boost who also has Cloud Resist . After that, she does not provide much merits as her active is middling, her awakenings lackluster, and Leader Skill underwhelming.

I rolled a NY Kanna during a previous Seasonal Super Godfest and have never found myself inclined to use her as we have many stronger options available. Quite disappointing for a 8-star Seasonal.

Enshrined Primordial Divinity, Kamimusubi – B

Pros
Cons
  • Valuable active
    • Bottom row to Fire
    • Clears all Binds
    • Clears all Unable to Match Orbs
  • Potentially high personal damage with 10 combos
  • Some Passive Damage via Rows Fire Row
  • Does not clear Awoken Binds
    • Hinders utility potential
  • Outpaced by Christmas Gremory
    • Same rarity for Seasonal
    • Same colour

New Year’s Kami has been upgraded and is able to function as a respectable mono Fire sub due to her ability to clear all Binds and Unable to Match Orbs effects while also generating a Row of Fire.

This is meaningful as at least one component will be useful but the biggest downfall is not clearing Awoken binds. Awoken Binds are quite common and often require a way to clear them quickly or risk falling victim to additional mechanics and most utility cards tend to have it built into their active.

This places constraints on team building as Kami is not able to fulfil this role and she is eclipsed by Christmas Gremory who can perform a similar role but can clear Awoken Binds.

As a result, I feel NY Kami can function as a possible mono Fire sub but is outpaced due to not being able to clear Awoken Binds.

New Year Artemis – S

Pros
Cons
  • High personal damage with TPA TPA & 10c
    • High ATK
  • 2 turn Colour Absorb Void
  • Clears all Unable to Match Orbs
  • Outclassed by Evo form
  • Hard to find a place to take advantage of her kit
Hopeful Hunting Princess, Artemis (New)

Pros
Cons
  • Wood has a viable Leader!
    • High HP & RCV
    • Easy to activate Damage Reduction
    • Solid ATK
      • Augmented via Enhanced Combos
  • High personal damage
    • Huge ATK stat
  • Valuable active
    • 2 turn Colour Absorb Void
    • Orb changer
    • Removes all Awoken Binds
  • 5 SB Skill Boost
    • Or more damage via TPA
  • Significant Passive Damage bonus via Enhanced Combos
  • Will become a valuable sub when her leadership falls off
    • Due to valuable awakenings & active
  • Lacks VDP
    • Wastes personal damage
    • Have to rely on subs

New Year Artemis is a fantastically powerful leader who combines easy to achieve Effective Health along with massive Damage potential due to their immense ATK stat and Enhanced Combos . These Enhanced Combos will add significant bonus damage with dual leaders and greatly eases the offesnive requirements of your team, even in challenging content.

Taking a closer look at her Leader Skill, NY Artemis has easy access to 4x HP/RCV along with 43.75% Damage Reduction when matching 5 or more combos. This is quite easy to achieve and will enable her to survive the vast majority of encounters. Finally, to achieve her full ATK multiplier, players will have to match 2 Wood combos which also procs their Auto Follow Up Attack.

In addition to this, Artemis comes with a powerful active skill that provides 2 turns of Colour Absorb Void, an orb changer, and the ability to clear all Awoken Binds. This is quite overloaded for a non-Transforming card while only having a 10 turn cooldown.

While all of this is promising, players will still need to bring a VDP solution as NY Artemis lacks this awakening but this should be reasonably easy to achieve, especially for World of Carnage 1 where Void spawns are relatively rare.

As a whole, there are not too many weaknesses to NY Artemis as she is not reliant on Transforming which in turn grants much more flexibility in team building. With this in mind, it can potentially be worthwhile to Monster Exchange for her, especially if you lack other end game leaders and are able to build a team for her. Furthermore, I feel her sub potential will remain significant once she is eventually powercrept.

7 Star base

Shrine-bound Draconic Songstress on Clarinet, Enola (New) – A

Pros
Cons
  • Super Poison Resist
  • Can achieve 7 Effective SB Skill Boost
    • 3 turn Delay + board changer
  • Potentially strong LS
    • High bulk
    • Solid ATK multiplier
    • Auto Follow Up
  • L
  • Passive Damage via Enhanced Combo
  • LS requires 8 Wood orbs for optimal performance
    • 2 combos for Damage Reduction
    • Match 5 for ATK & Auto Follow Up

Enola is a new 7-star card and she feels like a Wood version of Allatu as both feature Super Poison Resist and 7 Effective Skill Boosts Skill Boost that features a 3 turn Delay plus Board changer.

This grants her significant sub value as she can aid other cards Transforming along with featuring additional utility via an L and Enhanced Combo . As such, she will perform will on any mono Wood team that has Transforming requirements.

Outside of her significant sub potential, her leader skill features solid multipliers that are the same as New Year’s Artemis but suffers from a higher orb requirement and a harder time tapping into Damage Reduction. This is because Enola requires 2 Wood combos for Damage Reduction and 5 or more connected Wood for ATK and Auto Follow Up.

As a whole, I feel Enola can function as a solid mono Wood sub when Transforming is needed but can also be used as a leader if lacking other options.

New Year’s Dandy, Maeda Keiji (New) – B

Pros
Cons
  • 4 SB Skill Boost
    • 2 if you want more Passive Damage
  • Passive Damage via Enhanced Combo
  • Respectable personal damage
  • Orb Skin
  • Easy to use Leader Skill
    • Any 3 elements
    • Fixed 9s movement time
    • +4 combos with dual leaders
  • Fixed 9s may be hard for less experienced players
  • Requires solution for Voids
    • Most likely someone with VDP latent
  • Does not eclipse top tier leaders
  • Average sub potential

Keiji is another new card featured within the New Year event that also comes with an Orb Skin which means they can be directly purchased.

As a whole, I feel Keiji will function as a reasonable Rainbow leader due to his 400x ATK multiplier and 75% Damage Reduction when matching 3 or more elements. This is a wonderfully low threshold that should activate every single turn and having 75% Damage Reduction will often allow players to survive most mechanics.

Furthermore, the Fixed 9 seconds of orb movement time makes them immune to Time Debuffs but may also place pressures on less experienced players who might need more movement time. Thankfully, a 3 element match will grant Damage Reduction and +4 combos which means it is quite easy to overcome combo shields and utilize 10c cards. In addition to this, their active skill generates Light, Fire, and Hearts along with 30% Damage Reduction but cannot fully loop due to a 6 turn cooldown with dual leaders.

Despite the fact that 1/400/1/75% are strong multipliers, it is still inferior to the current top tier leaders who have more bulk and potentially higher offensive might due to Transforming Cards being significantly stronger overall who often create powerful self-systems of 2-3 turn cooldowns. As such, I feel Keiji’s viability will be shorter lived as Leaders, especially those not debuting at the top, often get pushed down due to Powercreep faster.

Orb Skin

New Year’s Baal – C

Pros
Cons
  • Fully Locks board
    • 2 turn CD
  • Relatively easy to use LS
  • Awakenings are all over the place
    • Does a bit of everything
      • No focus
  • Niche active

NY Baal features a bit of everything in terms of awakenings which lands him into a generalist role which is not an ideal place to be. This is because sub slots are highly competitive and the ones who succeed are those who specialize in a particular role.

As such, Baal is a Jack of All Trades, Master of None and it will be challenging to find a meaningful use outside of their full Board Lock. Being able to fully Lock a board will overcome Spinners which can be meaningful, but at the same time, it will be highly niche when you need this.

On the other hand, their Leader Skill is easy to use as it only requires Devils and 4 colours but at the same time, nothing special.

Taking all of this into consideration, I feel NY Baal will be a situational solution to Spinners or a interim leader for newer accounts.

Orb Skin

2537 New Year Horus – A

Pros
Cons
  • Has new Pixel form
  • Pixel form is much stronger
  • No true reason to pursue this form
Pixel Year’s First Dream God of Luck, Horus

Pros
Cons
  • Valuable 2 turn active
    • Unlocks orbs
    • RCV & ATK buff
      • Overwrites any Debuff
    • Easy to inherit over
  • 4 SB Skill Boost
  • Noticeable Passive Damage via Enhanced Combo
  • L
  • Viable sub for mono Fire teams
    • Eg. Seina & Gileon
    • Strong alternative to REM Horus
  • Difficult to acquire
    • Have to roll, cannot Exchange
  • LS requires only Pixels
    • Also lacks Damage Reduction

Pixel New Year Horus is a significant upgrade to their previous form and enables them to function as a stellar mono Fire sub due to their 4 Skill Boosts Skill Boost, valuable 2 turn active, Passive Damage via Enhanced Combo , and L awakening.

Together, these grant Pixel NY Horus tremendous utility as they can Unlock the board on demand (highly valuable for Seina ) while also providing a tiny RCV & ATK buff which can overwrite existing debuffs. Furthermore, the 2 turn cooldown means they can carry a much higher impact active and have it ready with relative ease such as a longer Delay like Red Shelling Ford .

As a whole, I feel Pixel NY Horus can be utilized on current end game teams as they can fulfill multiple roles efficiently and allows players to interchange their subs and inherits more easily due to their flexibility.

With that being said, NY Horus will be challenging to acquire as players cannot Monster Exchange for them which means rolling in a lackluster event.

2536 New Year’s Yamato – C

Pros
Cons
  • 6 SB Skill Boost
  • Primarily a SB stick
    • Other awakenings are underwhelming
    • Loses value if not Coop
      • Low value still if Coop
  • Not many uses overall

NY Yamato is essentially a glorified 6 Skill Boost Skill Boost card who offers relatively little beyond helping your actives be ready in time.

This is not to say that 6 true Skill Boosts is something to snuff at, but more so he brings nothing else relevant to the table and I feel he will not see much use overall outside of niche Farming situations.

New Year’s Khepri – B

Pros
Cons
  • 2 turn Colour Absorb Void
  • Respectable personal damage with 10 Combos
  • 4 SB Skill Boost
  • 2 Team HP
  • May be challenging to find a true home
    • Lacks true specialization
  • No Resists

NY Khepri features several valuable components such as a 2 turn Colour Absorb Void, respectable personal damage with 10 Combos, 4 Skill Boosts Skill Boost, and 2 Team HP awakenings. These all grant a healthy balance of utility and offense but my main fear is a lack of an ideal place to use her on.

This is because she does not feel highly specialized enough and her active while helpful, does not overcome Damage Absorb along with 2 turns possibly not being enough for the Menoas in World of Carnage. This is because many teams will require 3 or turns to kill the final Menoa which is why the longer duration actives are favoured. Of course, it is possible your team can kill in 2.

While I am aware that NY Artemis also has a 2 turn Colour Absorb Void and an active I praised, it was also because of the lower cooldown and much stronger additional effects.

Another downside is a lack of Resists if pursuing the 10 Combo Super Awakening as she can deliver respectable damage, but not on par with the current hard hitters while also lacking VDP . As such, I feel NY Khepri lacks a specialized enough role to justify the inclusion assuming more options are available.

New Year’s Ganesha – B

Pros
Cons
  • 4x Coin drop rate
    • Get rich SUPER fast
  • 1.5M button (500k x 3)
  • 4 SB Skill Boost
  • Coins essentially have no value
    • Too easy to acquire, no where to spend

NY Ganesha is the final 7-star card within the New Year’s event and features 4x Coin drop rate if used as a leader. This can lead to an outrageously high amount of Coins but is marred by the fact that Coins have little value.

This is because Coins are primarily used for swapping Inherits but despite players needing to do this on a regular basis, it will often not exceed the rate they are acquired. Furthermore, the majority of long term players have been sitting on displayed Coin Cap for a prolong period of time.

Perhaps if GungHo gave players a new and meaningful way to spend Coins, NY Ganesha will increase in value. But with that being said, this is a unique Leader Skill and while it does not justify actively chasing them by rolling, it won’t be a bad outcome if NY Ganesha does appear.

6 Star base

2535 3417 New Year’s Leilan – C

Pros
Cons
  • Two 10 Combos
    • 25x personal damage
  • Copious amounts of Orb Enhance
  • Underwhelming active
    • No extra effect
  • Almost only offensive
    • We have many other hard hitting cards
  • No VDP
  • Low ATK stat
    • Offsets high personal damage

NY Leilan now comes with double 10 Combo awakenings which propels her offensive potential along with numerous Enhanced Orbs.

While amazing damage multiplier are nice, her low ATK stat and lack of any utility through awakenings or her active holds her back. Furthermore, the lack of VDP invalidates her damage against Void spawns which in turn wastes all of her potential against what are often the more challenging encounters.

As such, NY Leilan is a damage stick with little utility and while she can hit hard, I feel that is not truly needed on well built teams as having the right utility is more important for surviving mechanics.

New Year’s Ame no Uzume – C

Pros
Cons
  • Respectable Button base in coop
    • 2x Coop Boost Multiplayer Bonus
  • Value plummets in solo
    • Loses out on 2 awakenings
  • Not that much value outside coop
    • Even then she is situational

NY Ame retains her double Coop Boost Multiplayer Bonus which grants 2.25x more stats in multiplayer which in turn makes her a more formidable Button base.

Sadly, she only truly shines in coop and even then, her value is okay as I feel we are starting to edge away from Button solutions due to higher HP value found in spawns (eg. current SDR Farming dungeon). As such, instant Rows or other premade orb generators tend to be more appealing due to higher damage ceiling.

5 Star base

3419 New Year’s Spica – C

Pros
Cons
  • Creates 2 columns of orbs
    • Aids in fast Farming
    • Synergy with new SR Hino
  • Primarily a Farming solution
    • Relatively niche overall
  • 1 SB Skill Boost

NY Spica can generate 2 columns of orbs on a 7 turn cooldown which has wonderful synergy with Farming leaders who proc from 5-matched orbs.

As such, SR Hino can deliver two floors worth of 6 million Auto Follow Up Attack with dual leaders with minimal effort. This can greatly accelerate the speed and ease in which you can clear content but does diminish in value depending on how many other double column/row makers you own.

2574 NY Mitsuki – C

Pros
Cons
  • Some Machine Killing potential
  • Modest Healing solution
  • Cute?
  • Does not excel in any one area
    • Better Machine Killers/Healing Solutions exist
  • Low priority overall
  • Relatively underwhelming
  • No SB Skill Boost

NY Mitsuki has some Machine Killing potential along with the ability to function as a Healing Solution. Sadly, does not excel in either area along with 0 Skill Boosts Skill Boost which will hamper her ability to be used on Transforming teams.

As such, I feel she is a budget solution when nothing else is available.

LD Hanzo NY Hanzo – D

Pros
Cons
  • 2 Dragon Killers Dragon Killer
  • Cannot use Dragon Killer latents
  • Only has 2 Killers
    • Many other options have 3/2 + Latents

NY Hanzo has 2 Dragon Killers Dragon Killer but cannot use Dragon Killer Latents along with many cards having 2 + Latents or 3 Killers which greatly eclipse NY Hanzo’s damage output.

As such, I feel that 9x personal damage is lackluster and subsequently has little value.

4 Star base

3420 Jeanne d’Arc – D

Pros
Cons
  • Auto Heal Auto heal shenanigans?
  • Does not fulfill any meaningful purpose
  • Comprises a large chunk of the rolling pool

Jeanne d’Crap returns and beyond weird Auto Heal Auto heal shenanigans, I cannot fathom a reason why she still exists as a REM card.

2540 New Year’s Tengu – C

Pros
Cons
  • 4 SB Skill Boost
  • SBR Skill Lock Resist
  • 4 turn base CD
    • Easy to inherit over
  • So similar to Farmable Tengu Tengu
  • We have Farmable cards with 5 SB
  • Killers won’t contribute meaningful damage
    • Low ATK, no other offensive awakenings

NY Tengu is essentially the same as Farmable Tengu Tengu which feels sad when you spend 5 Magic Stones for what is essentially a 7 year old Farmable card.

Do I plan to roll? & Dream rolls

I do not plan on rolling within the New Year’s event due to the underwhelming value of the 4-6 star cards who will not provide any meaningful value to my Monster Box. These cards also constitute the vast majority of the rolling pool and the chances of getting something meaningful is not worth the rolls.

With that being said, I would love to acquire New Year’s Reeche as they would grant me a tremendously powerful Rainbow sub that has a phenomenal active and damage potential in World of Carnage 1/Shura Realm. They would greatly ease team building restrictions for myself as will have a much more reliable access to a key active skill.

For my 8-star card, it would be pretty magical to roll Artemis as she would grant me a fantastic option for my underwhelming Wood box and will help give any future mono Wood card a viable home to be used on.

For 7-stars, Enola would also help populate my Wood box as she can function as a valuable Skill Boost Skill Boost solution that also provides additional utility and some personal damage.

Finally, the six through four stars are all underwhelming and I mostly selected them by cuteness as none would truly benefit my Monster Box.

My Dream Rolls

The above chart are the cards I would love to acquire from each rarity if I could choose one for my Mantastic account. This is my own personal opinion based on my Monster Box, goals and whether or not I have dupes.

Conclusion

The New Year’s Collab is an underwhelming affair to roll in due to the terribly high rolling rates for underwhelming bottom rarity cards. As such, I feel that it is better to either Monster Exchange or IAP the Bundles if one desires the higher rarity cards and save your Magic Stones for an event that has more value across all rarities.

For myself, I simply plan on doing the free rolls and hoping for the best. With that being said, let me know what you think about the New Year’s event and how much you plan on rolling in the comments below.

Happy Puzzling!

  1. I was VERY lucky to get 2 NY Reeche last year when this came out and I’m looking forward in getting Tsukuyomi as well because of her new revo. I’m not very confident in Lajoa because of his Active Skill of bringing down Jammers and Poison for 1 turn. But I have strong Light/Dark monsters that I can use to avoid using his skill such as Mega Dark Metatron.

As for Tsukuyomi, I really like to run a Light/Dark Team with her as the Leader because of her Leader Skill of 1 fixed damage when attack with Light and Dark at the same time. Or Maybe make a Water/Dark/Light Team because I’ve recently finished the Haku Story and evolved her and can make her as Sub Leader while making Tsukuyomi as the Leader.

If I’m lucky to get Lajoa through the Egg Machine, I might use him as Either Leader or Sub Leader and I’m not planning on using his skill at ALL. I do have some trade-able on hand, but will want to save them for Suou (Fire/Water) in the near future.

      1. Is the 300k Amaterasu Ohkami worth getting from the shop?

How about Haku? Or trading 2 the Haku for the new Evo?

Admittedly I have several Haku (1 Super, 3 Reincarnated, 1 Pixel, 1 Banishing, and 1 base) so it’s tempting.

  2. Update: I was VERY lucky to get Lajoa from the Egg Machine and let me tell you: he’s a beast in Light/Dark Teams. I was doubtful at first because of his Active Skill. But after using him in a Dungeon, he’s a force to be reckon with. Also, I’ve gotten back NY Tsukuyomi and thinking of using her as part of my Light/Dark Team as Sub-Leader. Lastly, Ive gotten another NY Reeche from the Egg Machine making that 3.

And the best part is that I didn’t even have to trade for any of these Monsters. Guess I was EXTREMELY lucky this time around!!

    1. Hey that is fantastic to hear you managed to roll so well =D

I am still on the fence about cards who have two dif colour Enhanced Combos as I feel it may dilute damage but if you are forced to always match those 2 specific colours, it should work out

Let me know what kind of content you have cleared

      1. Update: I just gotten myself another Lajoa from the Egg Machine and considering on pairing him up with Imperial Haku to make a Water/Light/Dark Team and having Kirito on board because I gave him the Roulette Recovery by accident. Luckily I gave him Ivory Ice for him to use the effect since I didn’t know about those types of latent awoken skill at the time. Got any advice on that?

I have enough Monsters to get one more Lajoa since I have 3 NY Reeche, but I’m going to save them for Suou (Fire/Water) for my Fire/Water Team when he comes back out.

As for Artemis however, I had to trade to get her. But I really wanted to get two because I can used both of her Base and Ult Evo form to block Damage and Attribute Absorption since I can’t seem to find a Light or Wood Type Monster that has them.

    1. Perhaps but I feel someone who uses VDP may be better as orb changing will also help everyone else. I feel that Albert would be wonderful as you don’t have to rush to Transform

  3. Just wanted to mention that those skill boosts make NY Reeche an ideal candidate to inherit a leader swap assist, giving her access to 7×6 boards as a kind of makeshift transformation.

Unfortunately, this isn’t as relevant as it was in last year’s meta/end game content. Since she doesn’t benefit much from skill boosts, you’re stuck spending multiple turns in “base form”; so it’s still pretty hard to tackle the Shuras.

    1. 7×6 is still less ideal to use and using these swap strats was to overcome hard content but SR/WoC is all doable on 6×5 so I don’t feel you need to use 7×6 swaps

    2. I’ve done this in A5 just to entertain myself. Positive is you can swap very soon because of the skill charge, but I found a major negative in that also because of the skill charge, it only takes 5 to 6 turns after her skill is up to blow past it and back to the leader swap.

  4. Great post as always, thank you!

I’m surprised to see Kanna ranked as C. I’ve actually been excited about the upgrades she got as a god/dragon sub. Although it is not an ideal tradeoff for awakening, the multiple TPA can provide an unmatchable orbs solution with the new latent tamadra (and her attribute color combo allows her to activate with most all late game unmatchable encounters).

Even though heart cross formation has not been in the meta for a very long time, I think this card is arguably one of the most powerful leaders (if it ever did make a comeback or a nice complimentary lead became available– holiday Gremory or promo Myr do not quite fit).

  5. Hi, thanks for the review! I have one small question, due to the free rolls we had previously I now have a bunch of dupes trips etc and I can trade up 4 to get one of the lower cards then use that one to trade for NY Lajoa. So essentially a 9 for one but that seems awfully steep. I could also just use the dupe Artemis instead as I am just missing one for the 5 trade. Would it be worth or just skip out on it?

      1. Okay, yeah I was thinking it’s mostly for the weapon assist but didn’t feel like trading up was going to really help or push some of my teams up and above. Was curious if I was missing something and should grab one up in case some dungeon or challenge pops up and I need one. Thanks for the input!

    1. I’m thinking of pairing her with Elven Emissary, Alynna. That’s a 297x, 25% dmg reduction and Auto-Follow Up when doing 2 Wood combos (dmg reduction of 43.75% if you activate Artemis’ 5 combo requirement)

Her skill after transforming makes a row of Wood, locks Wood and Full bind and Awakening recovery on a 4 turn cooldown.
That’s 5 out of the 6 Wood orbs to activate their abilities + locking Wood so any remaining orbs are guaranteed on the next turn.

      1. What susamoxartemis team did you use? I’ve tried that pairing, but I’m having a lot of trouble generating enough wood orbs for a vdp and hitting high damage reliably.

I know some people are using one or more Vishnu’s for orb generation

  7. Hello Mantastic:

So I’m currently making a Wood/Light Team and I want to use 2 Artemis. One as the Leader and the other as the Sub-Monster (or Sub-Leader). I do have Super Reincarnated Susano as Sub Leader because of his 2 wood combo leader skill and I do have Fujin but I’m not sure if I want to switch to her Revo form (Double-Fan Demon Princess, Fujin) and I would hate to be stuck with an God Fest Revo Monster.

Plus, I’ve enough tradeable monsters on hand like Dark Metatron (2 of them) and I would hate to roll to not only get more disappointing Monsters while trying to get another Artemis, but give up Mega Dark Metatron, Mega Skuld and some other monsters I’ve got from the God Fest Free Pulls.

Granted, I was extremely lucky to get newcomer Lajoa (2 of them at least lol) and gotten another NY Reeche (making that 3) and gotten back NY Tsukuyomi and already turn her into her Revo form on the first day of the first week of this event.

Luckily I’ve pulled another Tsukuyomi and can use her for trading later down on the line but I’m really aiming to get another Artemis to add onto my Wood/Light Team.

What Should I do, trade or keep rolling in hopes that I would get another Artemis?

    1. I am not sure why you would want to have a second Artemis. Yes she is strong but I feel you are having diminishing returns by this point

I feel you would be much better served by holding onto your Trade Fodder instead

      Like

      1. The reason why I wanted another Artemis is because I wanted to run a Wood/Light Team with her Base as the leader and another one as the Helper. Plus, aside from Fujin which I have, I don’t have any full Wood or full Light Monster that can tackle Damage Adsorption and/or deal with unmatchable orb status unless you happen to know one by chance. And also, I’ll take your advice on keeping my trade fodder a little longer since I’ve already had to trade for one Artemis already.

Plus, I”m EXTREMELY lucky that I already have 2 NY Lajoas , 3 NY Reeches and 2 NY Tsukuyomis that I managed to get on the first week of this event and I’m not planning on trading anymore after that.

I may as well make a mixed team with my one Artemis unless I’m lucky enough to get her from the Egg Machine. But thanks for the advice, that really helped.

    1. 300k Ama is nothing special imo, way better served with regular Amaterasu

As for Haku, her new evo is stronger and has modest capabilities but if you already own a Haku, don’t think you can trade

  9. Trying to decide if a last minute trade for ny reeche or lajoa would be worthwhile. I don’t have an immediate need for lajoa or his equip so he’s probably less likely Io guess. I don’t immediately have a rainbow team to play either, but I do like playing them occasionally as a change of pace and have a decent amount of 7* fodder available. I guess main thing is I don’t know if something will come up that I should have for trading. Reeche does seem like she would have value for a while.

    1. I feel if you are having hesitations/doubts, maybe don’t trade as it sounds like there is no stand out reason why you need them. Of course, if you are swimming in GFE Trade Fodder, maybe
