Actives that Directly Counter New/Dangerous Mechanics are Bad in the Long Run

Introduction

Titles are hard and this article will be exploring an idea that has been floating around in my head for some time. Like any longstanding game, new and challenging content has to be released to keep things interesting and we have seen some bizarre mechanics over the years. Some are more challenging compared to others but at least initially, had several ways to overcome them.

Sadly, I feel we may be starting down a less than ideal path due to GungHo releasing a new/dangerous mechanic and then unveiling a card who’s active can directly counter it. As such, players can now counter said mechanic and they can tune it upwards to the point where you must have the active or you lose.

In my opinion, this is not a good game design as it forces players to have these direct counters or simply lose the dungeon. This tends to be most punishing in longer content where one needs to cover so many mechanics already.

This article will explore my opinions on this matter and how it is possible to correct these problems before it gets out of hand.

Damage Absorb & Fujin

Damage Absorb (pink shield) is one of the worst mechanics at this point in time due to how “unfun” and impossible it is to overcome without a Fujin style active. Continue reading Actives that Directly Counter New/Dangerous Mechanics are Bad in the Long Run

Dragonbound & Dragon Caller REM Review and Analysis – August 2019

Introduction

The Dragonbound & Dragon Caller (DBDC) Rare Egg Machine returns to North America on Monday, August 26 and comes with small buffs all around but introduces three new cards (plus a new evolution). This may feel a little frustrating as most of the older/lower rarity cards received no additional love which may lower their overall usability. With that being said, the Dragonbound & Dragon Caller event is still a high value event for players who have never/barely rolled.

This is because the 5-star (lowest rarity) is home to some wonderfully powerful cards that may be challenging to replicate elsewhere. They may not be as unique/powerful compared to their initial debut, but they are still worth pursuing for most players and help make nearly every roll have some value. Generally speaking, the DBDC cards are highly specialized and are able to fulfill their respective role wonderfully well. While this means one may not be using them all the time, they are sometimes vital to own for specific content/mechanics as it is hard to replace them otherwise.

With being said, it makes it challenging to justify rolling in this event provided you have most of the bottom rarity cards. This is because this event has come around several times and with each repeat (assuming one did roll before), the chances of getting something new diminish. For example, I rolled heavily during the first event and was blessed with an outrageous amounts of Shazels but also picked up all of the 5-star cards. As such, the motivation to roll in subsequent events has drastically gone down as duplicates beyond the second tend to be wasteful.

For the most part, I would encourage all players to roll in this event assuming they do not own many/most of the bottom rarity cards as they are unique and can help one progress through new content. On the other hand, for players who have rolled in the past 4 events, the chances of rolling something new are quite low, and this event may be better skipping as a whole.

This article will summarize each card’s strengths and weaknesses to give you a better understanding of what is in store within this event.

Beach REM Review and Analysis – August 2019

Introduction

Ready for some fun in the sun? Ready to hit the beach with your new swim suit? I for one am personally forsaking the idea of having a beach body as I am getting old and grey in the hair. Regardless, the Beach REM returns to North America and comes with some new buffs/evolutions along with two brand new cards including Veroah in a bikini! With that being said, I am truly surprised that Beach Zela was not chosen as the new top-rarity card but I can see the overlap with Beach Yog’s active.

Unfortunately, this event is horribly top heavy which may make players think twice before spending Magic Stones. This is because the lower rarity cards have failed to receive meaningful buffs (or any changes for that matter). As such, if you are truly GungHo for a certain card, it may be best to utilize the Monster Exchange system instead of rolling. Furthermore, many Super Godfests feature Seasonal cards and is how I acquired most of my 8-star monsters from this event. As such, waiting for those can be another viable way to acquire these cards while also having stronger miss-rolls.

This article will summarize each card’s strengths and weaknesses to give you a better understanding of what is in store within this event.

Midsummer Week’s Tournament- Zeus Verse Strategies

Introduction

The Midsummer Week’s Ranking Dungeon has arrived in North America and features an exciting 12 floors. This basically screams out Zeus Verse time! For the most part, this will be the most accessible leader for the average player due to the fact that he is farmable while also having no team building restrictions. The only major drawback is that players must remain at full health.

While there are other builds available, they require more rare/hard to build compositions along with some relying on the No Skyfall badge. As such, I will be focusing on the most common choice: Zeus Verse (I also cannot make any of those teams so anything written about them is from observation, not actual experience).

Score breakdown

In Ranking Dungeons, players are scored based on the following:

  • Each Combo is worth 5,000 points
  • Each second remaining is worth 500 points
  • Hitting 40 Million damage is 10,000 points
  • Each active used to kill a floor (no combo made) is -5,000 points

Final Fantasy REM 6 Stars Review and Analysis – July 2019

Monster information was generously added in by Adam aka tocshi.

Introduction

The Final Fantasy Collab is one of the older events in Puzzle and Dragons, but it has not been seen for quite some time. This has led to the vast majority of cards growing stale and forgotten. With that being said, the entire Collab is receiving a massive overhaul for both new monsters and new evolution forms for existing cards along with buffs across the board.

All of this will make Final Fantasy one of the best events in Puzzle and Dragons that also costs 5 Magic Stones per pull. What makes the Final Fantasy Collab so strong is the fact that it has one of the best Diamond/6* rates of any Collab (22.5%) along with each card having numerous forms. This grants them an additional layer of viability along with the Weapon Assist forms (Crystals) being exceptionally powerful.

With that being said, one of the biggest drawbacks of the Final Fantasy Collab is the massive rolling pool, which makes it significantly harder to acquire any one specific card. Thankfully, the 5 Magic Stone cost grants us the lowest cost if using the Monster Exchange system.

This article will summarize each card’s strengths and weaknesses along with examining each individual form they can assume. As a result, this will be an exceptionally long article and CTRL + F may be your best friend. Furthermore, I will be breaking up this review into two parts for 6, and 5/4-star cards.

July 29 New Evolutions & Buffs

Introduction

Monday night saw the release of several exciting evolutions along with various buffs to existing cards as was promised on the GHNA stream. The other key/major announcement is the the highly anticipated return of the Final Fantasy Collab which will be coming soon (my guess is next Monday).

Regardless, this article will provide my thoughts on the more notable buffs/changes that were released last night.

Pros
Cons
  • Massive effective HP
    • 4x HP / 43.75% Damage Reduction
  • High personal damage with L
  • LS triggers from any 5 orbs in L

Skuld follows the trend of tremendously durable cards due to her massive Effective HP. She combines both 4x HP and 43.75% Damage Reduction which is only tied to any L (5) match of orbs. This gives her significantly higher consistency compared to Fatalis as both her Damage Reduction and maximum multiplier can be fulfilled from any given board. 4th REMDra Fever – 7×6 Event Strategies

Introduction

The REMDra Fever part 4 continues the trend of these special Ranking Dungeons for North American players. These events can allow players to achieve a Crown by simply hitting the cap of 999,999 points along with lucrative rewards along the way. With that being said, it will take numerous runs to achieve but will be faster this time around due to the 7×6 board but one can still augment their scores by following the strategies outlined in this article.

With that being said, the dungeon is profitable to run over and over again as it only costs 30 stamina and offers valuable drops. Furthermore, any number of players can achieve a Crown and is not only given to the first X number of players to hit 999,999.

This article will explain the rules for REMDra Fever and how to maximize your score potential.

3rd REMDra Fever – No Dark Event Strategies

Introduction

The REMDra Fever “Ranking” Dungeon returns to North America and diverts from the traditional Ranking Dungeon format as rewards are achieved via a cumulative score. As such, players can grind for a Crown by simply hitting the cap of 999,999 points. With that being said, it will take numerous runs to achieve but there are ways to bolster your score to save time, stamina, and mental sanity.

Draconic Orchestra REM Review and Analysis – July 2019

Introduction

This Monday will see the North American Debut of the Draconic Orchestra REM. This is a special 10-Stone machine that will have a special roster of cards who all share a musical theme.

Generally speaking, the very first time you acquire a card, it tends to have the most value. As such rolling in debut events can somewhat lower the chances of getting dupes as every card will be new. Unfortunately, the Draconic Orchestra REM is not designed well as the four 5-star cards will comprise 62% of all rolls. As such, players will be swimming in these cards who have niche value overall and excessive dupes are not ideal.

With this in mind, I am not inclined to roll in this event outside of maybe 1 or 2 attempts as the chance of a niche dupe are just too high. Furthermore, not many of the cards truly stand out and motivate me to roll. If players are truly interested, they could utilize the Monster Exchange system but this will be a high cost venture.
